Last Year proved to be one the most successful year of Bollywood as one another after film were successes. To name few Dil, Ghayal, Aaj Ka Arjun, BaaghiPratibandh and Kishan Kanhaiya. And even record breaking 22 crores grosser Maine Pyar Kiya technically was a 1990 release .

Now lets come to 1991. Despite huge stiff competition and box-office pressures, the year 1991 brought good tidings to the industry. Many films have struck gold at the box office. The first in line was Saawan Kumar Tak's medium budgeted blockbuster hit Sanam Bewafa starring heartthrob of millions Salman Khan. The film did  worth business of 2.5 crores in Delhi-U.P. and 1.5 crores in East Punjab, Rajasthan and Nizam. The film netted around 7.25 crores at box-office. Sanam  Bewafa has proved a lottery for distributors considering the fact that it was sold at a ratio of 20 lakhs per circuits. Amitabh Bachchan once again proved his mega star power at box-office by carrying Hum on his mighty shoulders. The initial response of film was earth shattering and  never seen before madness craze. The film proved a hit by grossing 7 crores nett at box-office. In Bombay circuit it netted around 2 crores.Phool Aur Kaante starring newcomer Ajay Devgan and Madhoo is doing bumper business at box-office. In most of the circuits it is expected to do business of above 1 crores per territory. Industry people termed Ajay Devgan as poor man's Salman Khan but he has proved them wrong. The film is expected to rake in between 8 crores to 10 crores in final run. G.P. Sippy's Patthar Ke Phool netted 80 Lakhs in Bombay and around 2 crores in South circuits. In big cities too it managed to do good business but in North it failed to do any wonders. Overall its an overflow earner due to its superhit business from South India circuits. Deepak Balraj Birj's Hafta Bandh did exceedingly well in Maharashtra by raking over 70 lakhs. But it outside Maharashtra, it hardly proved an earner. Randhir Kapoor's ambitious attempt to step into Raj Kapoor's shoes with Henna too proved very successful, the film was sold at ratio of 50 lakhs per major circuits and netted around 7 crores at box-office. Sadak starring Sanjay Dutt ,who is going through professionally and technically the best phase of his life, is doing whooping business of around 1 crore per major circuits and is expected to be a superhit .

Subhash Ghai's much awaited Saudagar sold at the ratio of above 1 crore per major circuits managed to do bumper business at the box-office . The film brought two thespians Dilip Kumar and Rajkumar after 32 years of gap. The film did fantastic business of 10 crores at box-office. Lawrence D Souza's Saajan proved to be the most successful affair of the year by netting around 10.30 crores at box-office. The film is still doing wonders at box-office.  The blockbuster music and superlative performances by Salman Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Sanjay Dutt has played major role in making it the biggest blockbuster of the year.

Kurbaan, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin, Izzat, 100 Days, Narsimha, Phool Bane Angaraay, Ramgarh Ke Sholay, Maa and Prem Qaidi were other hits of the year which raked in good profit of 50 lakhs to 60 lakhs per territory.

BUT as just where hits and unexpected success stories, the sun dipped on the what market considered sure hits. On the darker side of  spectrum were Amitabh Bachchan's Ajooba, Indrajeet and Akayla  sold at high price turned out to be huge debacles at box-office.. Even Love, Shankara, Farishtay, Khoon Ka  Karz, Do Matwale, Yodha, Qurbani Rang Layegi failed miserably at the box-office.

Madhuri Dixit charisma has kept her in the top slot with highest grossing hit of the year Saajan and fairly successful hit 100 Days. The  failure of Pratikar and not-so very successful Pyaar Ka Devta and Prahaar hasn't made much difference to her newly-earned  reigning queen status. Among the hero undoubtedly it's Salman Khan , the Rajesh Khanna of current generation, the most successful star of 1991. With Saajan becoming the highest grossing film of 1991, he has completed a rare distinction of six hits in a row out of which Maine Pyar Kiya (Rs.22 Crore) is the highest grossing film of Indian Cinema and Sanam Bewafa  and Baaghi too have proved to be mega hits at the box-office. But the year so far has been harsh for megastar Amitabh Bachchan. With the debacle of Indrajeet, Ajooba and Akayla in a row and stiff competition from youngers, more svelte stars, Amitabh's undisputed position seems to be fading as far as box-office numbers matters. Since 1986 only Aaj Ka Arjun and Hum have performed well at the box-office and even much talked and hyped Shahenshah fell without a trace at box-office due to its cost. . With three hits (100 Days, Izzat and Hafta Bandh) Jackie has restore his position among the top solo heroes. With Saajan and Sadak, Sanjay Dutt is going through the best phase of his life , which he has never seen in his 10 years old career.  Nadeem Shravan are the top-most musicians of 1991. Ajay Devgan, Pooja Bhatt, Madhoo, Zeba and Karishma Kapoor among the best debut. Aamir Khan and Sunny Deol consolidated. Anil Kapoor after back-to-back disasters was hoping Lamhe to revive his career but unfortunately the film too flopped miserably. As of now Anil is out of the equation and he needs one solid hit to be again in top heroes race.

Territory breakdown wise , Saajan has proved to be the year 1991's  far biggest grosser in Bombay, West Bengal,  and South India circuits while Sanam Bewafa has toppled the box-office in Delhi-U.P., Nizam , Rajasthan and East Punjab. Phool Aur Kaante has proved to  be highest grosser in C.I. and C.P. and definitely it's a bigger hit than both Saajan and Sanam Bewafa as far as profit matters.
