Split In India

New Delhi (UPI)-The latest official campaign in India is to do away with kissing-as depicted on public billboards, that is.

Despite the ! that the Kama Sutra, an ancient Hindu book depicting all sorts of mari- tal bliss is still one of the largest selling publications in this country, Indians have never quite recovered from the Vic- torian moral code foisted on them by the British colonialists.

So the Indian film censors have banned all kissing and cuddling scenes from the movies in this country.

But up to now the censors have been able to do little about, multicolored billboards depict- ing scantily clad ladies in the movies.

In fact they may themselves have been the cause of a recent riot here recently when patrons of a movie tried to tear up the theater because as they screamed-"we didn't see on the screen what you showed on the billboards!"

The combined effect of the riot and protests from the Jana Sangha Party, a right wing op position group here, has now caused the New Delhi authori- ties to send out municipal em- ployes to smear tar on the bawdy billboards.

The Jana Sangha not only wants to eliminate such posters as one showing a hero trying to kiss his girl in the Indian film Phool Aur Patthar, one of the three highest grossing film of India with approximate earning of $5.8M at box-office and another showing a girl naked to the waist in "Secret Agent FX-18," but is threatening to go out it- self and splash black paint on public displays urging Indian women to make use of the Lip- pes Loop, an intra-uterine contraceptive device that is part of the current family planning campaign going on here.
